Frequently Asked Questions

General

What is the V.O.S. Externship Program?

V.O.S. connects veterinary students and technicians with hands-on medical, business, and technician externships across our Las Vegas hospital network, pairing you with mentors and experiences that align with your goals and interests.

Where are your hospitals located?

Our hospitals are located across the Las Vegas Valley.

How long are the externships?

Most externships run 2–3 weeks. Many students pair a 2-week medical externship with a 1-week business externship.

Application & Matching

How do I apply and get matched?

Complete the interest form on this page with your preferred dates and focus areas (e.g., surgery, exotics, business). Our team will review your preferences and match you with the best-fit hospital and mentors.

How far in advance should I apply?

Apply 6–12 weeks ahead for the best availability, especially for peak months (Jan–Mar, May–Aug).

Can I request specific doctors or focus areas?

Absolutely. Share your interests on the form (dentistry, surgery, ER, business ops, exotics, etc.) and we’ll do our best to accommodate.

Program Details

Are externships paid? Is housing available?

Program details vary by track and timing. All externships are paid. After you apply, our team will reach out to discuss housing options and help coordinate the best setup for your stay.

What are the requirements to apply for the DVM externship?

You must be currently enrolled in an AVMA-accredited DVM program and authorized to work in the United States.

Will I work with exotic animals?

Yes—exotics exposure is available at participating hospitals. Select “Exotics” on the form and we’ll prioritize placements that see those cases.

Travel & Housing

Do you provide housing for externs?

Housing options are limited and vary by date. After you apply, we’ll let you know current availability and work with you on the best arrangement.

What should I bring with me?

Bring your school ID, scrubs, closed-toe shoes, stethoscope, and any required documentation. We’ll send a packing checklist with your confirmation.

After the Externship

Do externships lead to jobs after graduation?

Many do. Externships are a great way to build relationships with our teams and explore long-term opportunities.
